Intonation and Meaning

Pitch movement helps listeners understand whether you are continuing, contrasting, checking, or finishing an idea.

Focus

Place the strongest pitch movement on the word that carries the new or contrasting meaning.

Continue

Use an unfinished contour when the listener should expect more.

Finish

Let the final thought sound complete without forcing your pitch unnaturally low.

Apply it to your own message

Practice prompt: Say the same sentence once as neutral information and once as a contrast.

Transfer

Hide the text and say the same message again. Keep the meaning and structure, but allow the wording to change.
