Consonants, Vowels and Clear Endings

Consonants, vowels and clear endings

Listeners use vowel shape, consonant contrast, and word endings together. You do not need to exaggerate every sound; you need to preserve the details that carry meaning.

Consonants

Notice where airflow stops or continues. Compare meaning-changing contrasts such as coat/goat or safe/save without judging one accent against another.

Vowels

Listen for the whole vowel quality and its length in context. Compare ship/sheep as a listening contrast before changing your mouth position.

Endings

Keep grammar and meaning audible. Compare work/worked, need/needs, and plan/planned inside short sentences.

One-target practice

  1. Choose one contrast or ending that affects your message.
  2. Listen for it in a reviewed example.
  3. Repeat the word, then place it in a useful sentence.
  4. Replay once and check only the chosen target.
